A deformable micromirror for selective illumination

Abstract:

The contrast ratio of current data projectors is limited by the imperfect ability the of image-forming element (usually either a DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) for DLP projectors, or an LCD) to block unwanted light from the projection lamp from exiting the projector. The contrast ratio of a projector can be improved through a non-uniform illumination of the image-forming element. This can be achieved by inserting a deformable
reflective surface into the light path of the projector, between the projector lamp and the DMD or LCD. The deformable surface can be an array of analog tip and tilt mirrors, or a simple mirror device such as the one demonstrated in this paper.
