Conducting polymer based active catheter
Contractile polymers are applied to the tips of neuro-vascular catheters in order to help them navigate through the complex blood vessels found in the brain.
This research is aimed at developing a medical device to be inserted inside the body, for diagnosing and treating tissue diseases, and particularly stroke. The design is a miniature tube with artificial muscle units “smart catheter”, which can maneuver through the vessels and monitor the health of internal tissues. In one version, the smart catheter is equipped with an optical fiber connected to an imaging instrument. The imaging instrument utilizes optical coherence tomography (OCT) technique to generate high resolution volumetric images by scanning the optical fiber along the tissue surfaces. This project will pave the way for developing a new endoscopic technology.
